If You Must Get Divorced, Might I Suggest Doing It Like Nicole Kidman (In Style)
Look, I’ve never been married so by design, I’ve also obviously never been divorced. I think that being a divorcee is in most cultures, even more chic than being engaged. And to be clear, it’s only cool to be a divorced woman. Being a divorced man is sad.
I think about this photo of Nicole on the day her divorce from Tom Cruise was finalized often. The freedom contained in this image is a feeling I think everyone has felt at one point in their life.
I only bring up Nicole because it’s her season (aka fall, aka Practical Magic rewatch season) and also because she is going through a divorce again. Her divorce from former American Idol judge Keith Urban was announced this week and since the story broke, she (her publicist) has been killing it. She went to the Chanel show at Paris Fashion Week with her daughters looking like this:
New bangs are usually a red flag. A cry for help. The shorter the bang, the shorter the bandwidth, I always say. But these bangs to me signify a rebirth. These bangs are her Fight Song™. This week, Nicole’s cover of Vogue was unveiled.
The pictures are amazing.
You really can’t get divorced any better than this.
At work we were discussing Nicole’s divorce, and one of my co-workers said that she thought Nicole clearly doesn’t care about Keith: “Look at the way she works. She’s not goin’ home on time for dinner often.” And while I think that’s true, it could be read as someone who neglected her husband and her marriage crumbled. But also, more likely to me, this is the work ethic of someone who is incredibly ambitious (or has crippling debt - I’m looking at you Bruno Mars) but also someone who is avoiding a husband.
Anyways, this is now more serious than I was planning and there aren’t enough jokes to make this fun to read. So I’ll just end this by saying, I can’t wait to see Practical Magic 2. Hoping for it to be a Sister Act 2 (the official greatest sequel of all time) might be a stretch, but I’ll take a Shrek 2 on the Sequel Scale™. Hell, I’ll even take a M3gan 2.0.
OTHER EQUALLY IMPORTANT LIFE UPDATES
I got a coffee table baby!!!
I am thrilled to announce I spent less than $1000, it’s an antique, so I don’t feel like a garbage bag from hell buying something that’ll break in 3 months from Structube and eventually end up in a landfill. I know I said my boyfriend doesn’t like antiques (What’s he doing with me then?! Badum-Chhh!) but we found a really cute mid-century coffee table at an antique market. I bought it from an absolutely insane woman who mostly haggled herself down from $750 to $500 dollars and I am thrilled she did.
We put that baby in the back of a Toyota Corolla and drove the whole way home sweaty, and excited.
Anyways, now I’ll need to find something else to complain about for next week.
Until then, I love you. Comment and subscribe if you haven’t yet already.
Love,
Aidan
